Pilot deployment of the distributed sensing systems at EAC Dhekelia Power Station (GIS)

On July 12, 2022 LightSense project members had successfully installed the distributed temperature sensing (DTS) and intelligent distributed acoustic sensing (iDAS) systems (from Silixa Ltd) at EAC Power Station in Dhekelia district.

LightSense project utilizes the EAC’s existing OPGWs as the distributed sensor. The starting point of the optical path is the EAC Dhekelia Power Station (GIS) and the end point is the Ayios Nicolaos substation. The optical cables have a total distance of about 16.72 km. The route of the optical cable is mostly OPGW, except the start and end distance from/to the substations which is underground (armoured duct cable).
The distributed sensing systems monitor the temperature, vibrations and strain of the optical cables for providing useful information and also for identifying abnormal behaviour on the cables and thus in general possible network failures in the power network.
