On July 25, 2022 LightSense project members had successfully installed the multi-mode distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system (from Silixa Ltd) at EAC District Office substation in Nicosia.
LightSense project utilizes the EAC’s existing underground optical cables as the distributed sensor. The starting point of the optical path is the EAC District Office substation (GIS) and the end point is the Papakostas substation (SOPAZ area). The route of the optical cable is underground, and the optical cable is collocated with the power cable.
The deployed distributed sensing system monitors the temperature of the optical cables for providing useful information and also for identifying abnormal behaviour on the cables and thus in general possible network failures in the power network.
